Construction of new Prince George Drive drop-off facility 80% complete

Today, Councillor Zahid Badroodien, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Waste, visited the construction site of the new Prince George Drive Drop-off facility. The project is now 80% complete. The R93,5 million facility hopes to assist in minimising illegal dumping in the area, and improve percentages of waste diverted from landfills.
Parkwood, Southfield, Fairways, Elfindale and Lotus River communities are set to benefit from a new City of Cape Town Drop-off site located on Prince George Drive. The facility will be a free and convenient option for residents and small businesses. Vehicles, with a carrying capacity of 1,5 tonnes, will be able to drop off garden waste, building rubble and recyclable waste.
The facility is being constructed with local labour and is expected to be completed by April 2022, if all goes as planned.
To date, the majority of the structure has been completed with the finishing and external works currently under way. The external road and parking area, traffic signalisation, landscaping and irrigation still need to be completed with the final connection and commissioning of the electrical supply, water supply and fire systems to be concluded shortly thereafter.
The facility has been designed with separate access control points and roads for heavy operational vehicles that work on the site and the public’s vehicles to improve traffic flow and reduce waiting times.
‘A key objective of this project is to ensure that waste is reduced. Recyclables that are taken to drop offs free space at the landfill. If communities make good use of this facility, it will also reduce dumping of rubble in the area and breeding areas for pests as well as improve property values, among other knock-on benefits,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Waste, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
The Prince George Drive drop-off facility will include the following buildings:
- Recycling building
- Chipping facility
- An administrative building including offices, a store, meeting area, mess area, male ablutions, female ablutions, a toilet for persons with special needs, and covered patio area.
- Guardhouse and weighbridge building including an office, male and female ablutions and kitchen with a mess facility
- A staff waiting area at the drop-off skips
